Things That Make Me Happy
Reading, then seeing, IN A LONELY PLACE. How can two such different versions of a story both work so well. Cheers to Dorothy L. Hughes for her genius in writing both.
Lots more lovely weather in Michigan. We feel so guilty enjoying it when Houston and Louisiana are in such dire straits.
Loved the pilot of THE DEUCE. It is such a novelistic show. It must be written by novelists rather than TV writers, right?
I love Instagram, where I was able to share my son and his family's trip to Niagara Falls and Stratford. Sure in the old days you saw pictures a week later, but now you feel like you are following them around. Thanks to my son, Josh, for being so diligent in snapping his iphone.
Phil finished radiation on Wednesday. They ring a bell and cheer for you as you leave. It's not enough to want to come back though.
Enjoyed WIND RIVER this week. It may have been a bit too violent, but it was essential to show what the victims endured. If you don't feel their pain to some extent, you can't really care about them.

So happy to hear about Phil's news. Wishing you well as he moves on. And, as always, I love this perspective.
Hearing about Phil ringing the bell makes me happy this morning.
They should ring bells and cheer for you and Phil everywhere you go. Sincerest hopes that the treatment takes hold.
I'm glad that Harvey did not hit us. My thoughts and prayers go out to those who were in its path. Now I have to worry about Irma.
Jessie and Ceili stopped by last night and made chicken with veggies. Yum!
Binge watched the two seasons of THE BRIDGE. Season one was very good and season two was outstanding.
Finally got to read a book I had been looking for for years: the anonymously-edited WEIRD TALES -- ENGLISH. It will probably be my FFB this week.
The jungle in my back yard is now 95% tamed. There is still a lot of thorny vines to eliminate. Some of those suckers are thirty feet long and were lurking in the brush just waiting to attack.
I hope you and Phil have a great Labor Day and a wonderful week filled with laughter and sunshine and rainbows and lollipops.
Diane and I are happy with our new dermatologist. Our old dermatologist retired suddenly due to a health issue (we had been with him for over 25 years). Changing doctors is always iffy, but Diane's internist recommended this dermatologist and it all worked out well. After the appointment, Diane said, "He's so young...and cute!"
Glad to hear about Phil hitting that milestone!
I suspect you liked WIND RIVER more than I did.
THE DEUCE is getting Good Reviews everywhere!
Great news about Phil. I hope all continues to go well.
You can't go wrong with Gloria Grahame, as far as I'm concerned.
THE DEUCE was well done, but man, how sleazy! There had to be systemic police corruption to allow pimps like that to sit openly at Port Authority picking up innocent girls right off the bus (though the one they showcased was clearly ready of her own volition). I liked Maggie Gyllenhaal, especially the scene with the birthday boy. By the way, the scene of James Franco and his wife talking was filmed at the park under the Verrazano Bridge, the same place where Tony and his buddies harass the two gay kids the day after the disco in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER.
We enjoyed two recommended movies this week, LITTLE MEN and THEIR FINEST. We're enjoying series on Netflix and Acorn, though they've been a little dark for my taste, You need an occasional break, which is why I enjoyed the first episode of THE GOOD KARMA HOSPITAL (and that India/Sri Lanka scenery) on Acorn.
So glad Phil is done with radiation
Wish we had ACORN. Not sure why our TV can't stream it.
I think it is going to get sleazier once they start making porn.
Megan's apartment building looks exactly like that one across the street from them.
You are always hearing about girls that get plucked right off the bus but wow.
We have watched parts of many seasons of THE BRIDGE. We got scared off of THE TUNNEL though.
I thought it was one of the best noir movies ever. Tragic, Steve.
Patti, I don't know if this will work for you, but this is how we got it. You go to the Smart Hub button on the remote, and it shows Netflix, Amazon Prime, a couple of others, but not Acorn. There is a box that shows several other things (including a light blue box that says nothing) and you go there and it then gives a longer list of options.
Acorn was still not shown, but there was a search option at the far end. You go there and type in Acorn and it came up. You can figure out how to get it from there.
Good luck.
I'm so glad Phil has "graduated" from radiation. They didn't ring bells or even acknowledge it was my last day when I finished. Hopefully his tiredness will abate over the next few weeks and he'll be back to his normal self!
The weather here continues in the high 90s and low 100s, so again this week I'm happy we have air conditioning, though I fear the electric bill.
The black-eyed Susan shrubs in our garden are a standout right now.
Couldn't do it that way, Jeff, but I found it on Amazon for $4.99 a month. Tell me what's good to watch as you think of it.
We have never had any luck with Susans, Rick. I don't know why.
Patti-the post about Bogart & Grahame was not mine.
You can Acorn thru Amazon Prime. I had it for awhile but ran out of things to watch.
Love this weather. Wanted to see B52s Friday and George Clinton tonight but I can't do much walking. Found out from my podiatrist that I have torn Achilles tendons in both feet. Getting a MRI Friday to see how extensive the damage is. If its not one thing its another.
How did you get to see The Deuce early ?
Steve, HBO has the premiere available On Demand. It starts next Sunday, I believe.
Patti, we will send you a list of what wee're watching. We watched season one of LINE OF DUTY, a somewhat nasty corrupt cop show. We're watching a Canadian cop show now - 19-2. It's set in Montreal. The original version was in French, but this is the English adaptation, which apparently followed the original series at first, then diverged in season two. Also watching MURDER IN SUBURBIA, a British women buddy cop show, plus the latest series of VERA, which we didn't get on PBS here yet. Also THE GOOD KARMA HOSPITAL. We've tried and rejected 2-3 other things. We probably have 15 other things (mostly series, but some movies on the watch list). Will send the list.
HBO has it ON DEMAND and on HBO GO. Sorry about that Achilles tendons, Steve. Do you have a good doctor here.
Thanks again, Jeff. How did we survive with just the networks for so long. I can't think of a show we watch on networks anymore.
I missed this yesterday but am glad that I have a job where I can enjoy Labor Day. I have very good work conditions and supportive public, co-workers, City administration, etc.
I was talking to an asbestos abatement guy this morning whose usual work drive from Milwaukee to Oshkosh is 1.25 hours. He then has to drive from the shop to the work location, work, go back to the shop, then drive 1.25 hours home. The work four-ten schedules and that makes for long days.
I'm glad I bought a lightweight jacket on clearance from Eddie Bauer on Sunday that I wore today.
Those drives will kill you. Glad I never had to to it. Although come to think of it, I used to have an hour + ride on a bus twice a day.
