Things That Make Me Happy

Spending Father's Day with Phil, Josh and Kevin (as well as Julie, Kevin's mom). A nice day indeed.

I expect I will have more to be happy about next week. This week sort of ran over me with doctor and dentist appts. A movie I expected to like but really didn.t. Books I expected to like but didn't.

Hope you had more to be happy about than I did.

Most of my satisfaction came from TV shows. MASTER OF SEX, BETTER CALL SAUL and I LOVE DICK. It took me the entire series to get to a good place with I LOVE DICK. But GRANTCHESTER and THE TUNNEL are back tonight. So maybe next week is going to be euphoric.

REMINDER: HEIST NOVELS FOR FFB on July 14. Let me know if you think you are too busy to be doing this.

I'm glad you found at least some things to be happy about, Patti. I love that way of coping with life.

I had a great Father's Day despite the rain.

I love the idea of the caper/heist novel FFB. My problem will be which one to pick!

The Buffalo Sabres named their former Hall of Fame defenseman, Phil Housley, their new Head Coach. I'm happy about that!

Can't say we watch those shows. We watched Season 1 of GRANTCHESTER and didn't care much for it at all and haven't gone back. We're watching BOSCH (finished Season 2) and JESSICA JONES and CATASTROPHE (just finished Season 3) and THE WIRE and FARGO, as well as John Oliver and Samantha Bee.

Highlight of the week: SPIRITED AWAY, which I'm still not positive we hadn't seen before. Some of it was so familiar, but other parts, not at all.

Saw another off-Broadway show, Horton Foote's THE TRAVELING LADY (originally written in the mid-50s) at the lovely, small Cherry Lane Theatre in the West Village. Austin Pendleton, who directed it, was there taking congratulatory handshakes at the end.

Read one book I really enjoyed, John Scalzi's THE COLLAPSING EMPIRE, which is not about the Trump Era. Also enjoying Bill Crider's EIGHT ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES.

Looking forward to next Sunday's dinner with George and Diane Kelley.

If you look a little bit closer, Patti, I think you'll find a lot more to be happy with. Phil, Josh, Kevin, and Julie on their own probably brought enough happiness to fill up a week. Doctors and dentists can be a drag, but you made it through -- something else to be happy about. When books and movies disappoint, that reinforces the knowledge that your tastes are yours alone and that you are an individual with unwavering judgement. It's never a matter of is the glass half-empty or is it half-full; it's always a matter of are you going to finish off the glass and pour yourself another.

This week, my Pollyanna little self scored thusly:

- Flag Day, despite being The Donald's birthday (boo! hiss!), is always great because, well it's Flag Day. It's also the birthday of my late Father-in-Law (woot!) and the whole family celebrates by going out and having ice cream for dinner. This year we asked around for suggestions for a great ice cream parlor and were told, if you find one, let us know. We settled for Marble Slab Creamery -- good ice cream, skimpy on the toppings, and they forget to put the banana in Erin's banana split. We had a great time anyway.

- Since I mentioned The Donald above, I have to say that I'm happy he hired criminal attorney John Dowd as a lawyer for his ever-growing klerfluffle. As you know, I'm not a Trump fan, but John Dowd happens to be my daughter's father-in-law. Although we disagree politically, John -- one of DC's top attorneys -- is man of honor and integrity and will defend Trump while never veering from the truth. With John on one side and Robert Mueller on the other, the country will get a fair and balanced (can I used that phrase, now that Fox has abandoned it?) investigation from both men.

- Pie. Pie makes me happy. For Father's Day, Jessie and the girls came over and made a chicken pot pie to die for. This was followed by three different types of pie for dessert. I think they love me.

- We started up with HBO again. This means we get John Oliver and, starting next week, PREACHER. YEA!

- On our daily walk through the neighborhood, we often see a rather large brown rabbit hopping from place to place. He looks happy so that makes me happy.

And you be able to see Megan's show THE DEUCE in Sept! I am happy about that.

CATASTROPHE is both funny and sad. They are getting so little joy from their kids between his job problems and her cheating problems.

Family vacation to South Dakota all of last week. We stayed at a couple rental homes and had nice time.

My son is super into mountain biking. He and I rented a couple bikes at a shop in Spearfish. The bikes were much nicer than what we could afford to buy the boy so it's neat to get him the chance to ride new trails on fancy equipment. we had to stop a bit early because I crashed and wonked my shoulder super bad.

That was probably Carrie Fisher's last role, as his awful mother.

I've been happy with the weather here, but it's about to get into the high 80s and maybe above, which is not good for me.

I went to the local Farmer's Market Saturday morning, got fresh strawberries. A variety called Hood which are especially sweet, but are only in season for about a month so it's get-em-while-you-can. I made strawberry shortcake for Saturday night, and it was wonderful. Also, fresh asparagus, lettuces, and cherries. Love Summer produce!

Barbara's daughter is coming from San Diego Saturday for a short visit. She has never been here, not seen where we live.

I read Manitou Canyon by William Kent Kruger, the latest in the series, so I'm ready for the new one coming in late August. It was very good as are they all.

That is such a fantastic way to think about the klerfuffle. Knowing people with integrity are involved makes me feel better.
