Forgotten Movies: FISH TANK

Andrea Arnold wrote and directed this British film in 2009.  I am on a bit of a Michael Fassbender kick and I remembered this one when I saw his credits on IMDB.

It's the story of a teenager being raised by an awful mother but who is somehow is strong enough not to allow it to ruin her life. When her mother's new boyfriend shows a (at first) kindly interest in her interest in dancing, things look up.

Reminds me a bit of an English version of DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL of two years ago. And it brings up the question of how can single mothers introduce men into their households without endangering their teenage daughters? Scary, exhilarating
, honest.

FISH TANK captures the risks of teenagers who are dependent on adults who don't make good decisions. True to Life, indeed.

Hmm....This is one I haven't seen, Patti, but it sounds compelling. Glad you found it a powerful view.

I stopped watching this after a half hour or so. The creepy situation with the guy and the girl was too much to take. The mom was a rotten mother.

Parents have a different tolerance level than once-parents do.

My sister (a single mom) made a decision not to bring dates home or have any men in her house for years. She said it was just better not to introduce anyone into that situation. Meanwhile, a male relative married a woman with two children (a boy and a girl). All went well with the boy, but as the girl got older she threatened to call the police and claim she was being abused every time she couldn't get her way. There are bad situations on both sides. Glad I've never been in that situation--as a child or a parent.

Did you see Michael Fassbinder in the TV adaptation of Christie's AFTER THE FUNERAL? He was good, but they certainly sexed-up the role. Unintentional, I'm sure.

Wonder if I can get the Christie on Netflix.

Yes--they're on Netflix: it's the adaptations with David Souchet as Hercule Poirot.
