Forgotten Movies: Heavenly Creatures

I have been impressed with Melanie Lynskey on TOGETHERNESS so decided to revisit her first film HEAVENLY CREATURES from 1994. It is the story of two schoolgirls (the other played by Kate Winslett) who form an intense relationship based on their joint love of fantasy and literature. And what happens when their parents decide the friendship is perhaps too intense. Peter Jackson certainly showed an immediate affinity and flair for knowing how to do this sort of film. Both women are compelling although not entirely sympathetic in their race toward judgment. Very fine film. And, of course, one goes on to become Anne Perry.

I haven't seen HEAVENLY CREATURES but I'm about to rectify that. I'm ordering a copy from my public Library right now!

Oh, this is one I've not seen, Patti. It sounds absorbing, though.

It was a good one indeed. Winslet got the attention at the time but both did a good job.

Didn't the two women end up living only a short distance apart in England?

I know they never saw each other again after serving their prison sentences. (it was part of their parole) And, of course, Anne Perry (name change) went on to write many books.

I haven't seen it but I saw the Simpson's episode that was a take off on it.

Anthony Boucher suggested to Marijane Meaker that she write a Gold Medal book as by "Vin Packer" about the incident.

I guess nobody has really done it, have they?

I have that Vin Packer book. If I remember I will bring it for you next week, Patti. It's called THE DANGEROUS FRIENDSHIP, I believe.

My mistake - it's The EVIL Friendship.

OK. Found the book. Now I have to remember to bring it. I don't know why the phone keeps double posting.
