I have few regrets, but one is that I didn't become hip to Tom Waits sooner. (The Beloved Spouse turned me onto him when we were watching The Wire.) Because of that, I'm always struck by the incongruity of his voice versus his youthful appearance in these older videos.
No one can break my heart singing a sad song like Tom Waits. Even when I struggle to figure out what the hell he's talking about, the pain comes through. He's the best, and almost certainly the coolest white man in the world.
Exactly how I feel. And every once in a while I forget how much I enjoy him and rediscover him. The trouble with having no good radio stations anymore to remind us.
