I took today off from work ( knowing I'd be on the Internet all day if I went in) and aside from two hours today working at a poll have the day free. I have tried to come up with a relaxing movie to take my mind off of well, you know.
What movie would you choose to take the stress off? I would have chosen Pillow Talk if I could have found it.

#2 daughter and I are going to finish Ken Burns' The Civil War. She also loves Mr, Smith Goes to Washington
"His Girl Friday" always makes my head spin in a good way.
"The Big Chill" has some great music.
Four great ones. Although the first three do require attention rather than somnambulism.
Patti,
You have done more than most in stirring up interest in the election and you deserve to relax.
I used to watch "Harold and Maude" all the time but my tape finally wore out and I don't own anything in DVD. "Ferris Bueller" will do it for me but I am really busy today with non-campaign (writerly) things.
John, Ohhh! The Big Chill--fabulous souund track. I'll have to get that out of the library again.

Patti,
I know your idea was for a nice, easy-going movie to watch. If that's the case, I prefer long BBC adaptations of classic literature. This past spring, they ran all of Jane Austen's films on consecutive Sundays.
However, I usually prefer to channel the stress into exciting movies. Thus, I'd likely watch Raiders of the Lost Ark, Die Hard, Terminator 2, etc.
Jungle Book (Disney cartoon)
Strawberry Blond
Princess Bride
2 Richard Farnsworth flicks: The Grey Fox, & his final film,The Straight Story. They are quiet movies; beautifully photographed, with interesting characters.
[In my humble opinion of course.]
John McAuley
Either John Wayne or Clint Eastwood.
The Shootist and The Outlaw Josey Wales would probably be my choices.
Hey, I'm an unrepentant male. What can I say.
Monty Pyhton and The Holy Grail.
Animal House.
The Blues Brothers.
The American President is always nice when the spousal unit and I want to watch something light and fun. [No, really, this is not an attempt to inject politics into the comment thread.] The Princess Bride is great comfort cinema, too.
I'm a huge Sandra Bullock fan so "While You Were Sleeping" or "Hope Floats" alway work for me.
I usually go for either a Woody Allen: Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crime and Misdemeanors, etc.
or, I go more existential and watch I Heart Huckabees, Adaptation or Magnolia.
The Great Escape. What can I say? It's the Y chromosone in me.
Some of these I've never seen: The Princess Bride, for instance. Woody Allen always works. Love those Farnsworth movies. Never saw Hope Floats either. Never saw The Shootist. Never saw Jungle Book. Boy, for someone who watches two movies or more a week, I've missed a few. Animal House would be fun. I wonder if my library is open today. The Great Escape would get me too excited with Steve McQueen in it.
Terrie-Nobody's done more than you so rest............
You've never seen The Princess Bride? Hie thee to a video store or Netflix queue. And bookstore.
If it were out on DVD, I'd choose my favorite movie this year: "Mamma Mia". That movie could get my mind off almost anything!
Oh, boy, I loved that movie (Mama Mia). I know a lot of people didn't, but I felt buoyant after it. That's what I'll watch if my guy loses.
I'm in the comfort zone with any John Wayne western.
For a relaxing time - Lonesome Dove, Return To Lonesome Dove - maybe, Saturday Night And Sunday Morning or Reach For The Sky.
You would love Princess Bride. I just don't think it's possible to relax tonight, though. I am about to crawl out of my skin and use it to smack things, or something.
You seeing the Oakland County numbers? Woohoo!
Hey, Maria. I remember you telling me PB was good before.
Oh, Saturday Night. I loved that movie and haven't thought of it in years. Now I love some Westerns but they would never make me relax. Funny how guys seem to relax with action movies but not women. Reach for the Sky-totally a new one.
You didn't really need to be nervous...but, then, I'm usually right about this kind of thing...so I can reassure myself, but there's no reason for others to be reassured. HIS GIRL FRIDAY and THE CANDIDATE would make a good double-feature.
For "escapism"--well, the two good "high" fantasy films of the last coupla years, STARDUST and EVER AFTER, might well go along with THE PRINCESS BRIDE...the "contemporary"/"low"/"urban" fantasy STRANGER THAN FICTION (that would go well with ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND...)...
Reach For The Sky is the bio of Battle of Britain fighter pilot Douglas Bader. He lost his legs in a flying accident before the war and the movie follows his rehab and fight to fly again. He was shot down over Germany and the British had to 'drop' a new pair of tin legs into the hospital grounds. Bader then escaped from the hospital, was recaptured and imprisoned in Colditz Castle.
Brilliant movie - catch it if you can.
