Wait-Don't Forget the Books From Earlier Years
Lesa Holstine reading with Josh in the background.
A big push is underway right now to suggest that people buy books this year as Christmas gifts, easily one of the most affordable options.
I want to suggest that we all buy books both old and new. No reason our purchases have to be limited to recent publications.
Here's a good policy, buy everyone on your shopping list a recent book and one from an earlier year.
And while you're at it, buy some warm clothes at retail stores and donate them to charity. They need our help too. Both the stores and the charities.

It's a nice though but I don't know how many of my friends would see the point - they'd think I was cheap buying them a secondhand book.
A good place to get discounted books is at Indigo-Chapters stores. I've picked up hardcovers in fiction and non-fiction at reduced prices ending up as gifts or going to the library and retirement homes as donations.
It doesn't have to be secondhand necessarily. Just not brand new. But secondhand is good. Maybe include a note saying "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold." I'm kidding, but only sort of.
We don't have that chain here, Barbara. But nice ideas.
Have to read Shadow of the Wind.
