My friend and writing group colleague, John Gallagher, has just published a book, GREAT ARCHITECTURE OF MICHIGAN with Wayne State University Press.
John and photographer extraordinaire, Balthazar Korab, have captured through pictures and words some of the greatest buildings in Michigan.
John is the architectural critic and business writer for the Detroit Free Press and Korab, a Freep photographer.

I'll have to look up the new book and enjoyed seeing the great photos of the great architecture in MI.
I'd have a hard time picking just one bit of architecture out in my town, but I love many of the buildings made out of local sandstone.
Wow, that Douglas House is something. and I am not one for modern architecture.
Terrie
Interesting designs. unique architecture is rare in my area, but there are a few places I plan to show one of these Mondays.
And I will get that picture of me reading to my boys sometime this week. Thanks for asking.
Wonderful pics and NY has nothing on you:) My favorite building (in my little town in upstate) is the local elementary school. It reminds me of those first few fun filled years.
I'd have a hard time choosing my favorite building. There are so many old buildings with character!!
Where is the Grand Hotel? and the Douglas House is interesting, too.
Thanks for an interesting look at Detroit.
We have snow, yes we do! Thanks for the message on my blog!
The cats are so upset. They walk out on the deck, shake their back right paws, then their back left paws.
Fortunately, like you, we have some lovely photos of sunny days, too.
The lake is 400m (437 yd) across and I cannot see it for the blizzard. There is a soft dusting of white on the trees - as if Mother Nature painted the tips of the dark green pine trees.
The Grand Hotel is on Mackinac Island, (pronounced Mackinaw). It is car-less and you get to it by boat. The film Somewhere in Time was filmed there in the seventies.
I just returned from a trip back to Pittsburgh, which is, to me, still "my town." The Cathedral of Learning on the Pitt cmapus is a beautiful and imposing structure that announces the campus to all passers, as impressive on the inside as out.
Dana-You said the magic word. My grandfather worked on the design for the Cathedral of Learning with Charles Klauder. I saw it for the first time last year. I have a few of his designs for it.
Yes, the Douglas house is gorgeous, and like Terrie, I'm not big on modern architecture. As for my favorite bit of architecture in my town, I'm tempted to say Space Mountain, lol. Anaheim isn't exactly an architectural mecca. I'll have to give this some more thought. Your friend's book sounds great.
Linda
I'd take the weather you have on Space Mountain. It's already snowing here.
Hi Patti,
I like your blog and visit often. I've posted it on my blog roll. If you could return the favor, I'd be honored. Thanks!
Chris
Thanks, Patti. I can try and do a Forgotten Book. What is the criteria, exactly? Basically my pick of something relatively obscure or overlooked? If I keep to L'Amour, I would probably do "Smoke from this Altar," his book of poetry, which I believe is one of his lesser-known works. If not L'Amour, I can think of several others I wouldn't mind writing about. So, 11/21 sounds great.
What is the history of Forgotten Books Friday, anyway?
Good post. Now I want to see a post on the Hotel on Mackinaw Island.
My current town is Toronto, so that building would be the Old City Hall. My first town was Edmonton and my favourite building there is the MacDonald Hotel on Jasper Avenue. It has such grand interior.
You read my mind, Barbara. It occurred to me when I wrote this one, I had never done one on. I've only been there once, believe it or not. It's farther than Toronto from my house.
Congrats, John Gallagher! And, Patti, we're both doing MTM Michigan posts! Ha!
Fantastic photos!!!
All stolen sad to say. But who can compete with a professional.
