Three months ago, we were excited over the Democratic Primary. We said, how could we lose with so many good candidates to choose from.
But something's happened, and now it seems possible that no matter which candidate gets chosen they'll lose because we've let the genie out of the bottle: the genie being that a candidate can perceive their candidacy as more important than seeing the Democrats take the White House.
Voters are doing this too, saying, "I'll vote for McCain rather than Obama or rather than Hillary." Severe animosity has replaced excitement.
An underground campaign, emanating perhaps from Republicans perhaps from other quarters, is tagging Obama as a secret Muslim, someone who would favor African-Americans. I've heard this several times in the last week.
Also attacks coming from both sides are beginning to take their toll on both candidates. The eventual candidate is going to have a very short time to turn this around if this drags on until August. Find a way to end this process by June. Approach each candidate about negative advertising.
We must find away to stop this. Surely anything is better than electing someone who seems the war as a hundred-year deal.
What ideas do you have about saving the White House?

Break the country up into pieces and let them all start over again.
Really, I'm so tired of it all. It's bad enough trying to referee my boys without feeling like two grown adults, who supposedly could lead the country, need the same. I'm seriously considering sending them all an email titled, "You're losing me."
Why do the voters count for so little? Remember when the big deal was the soccer mom vote? Now no one seems to care where the votes come from. These people really have lost touch with the majority. Thank you, money and power.
My FIL brought up the excellent point yesterday that Abraham Lincoln would never get elected in this day and age - not enough resources. Isn't that a disturbing thought?
Try being married to a professor who writes books on the presidency. Ya never get away from it. Even now I hear Chris Matthews droning on.
It's interesting that you've heard people still insisting that Obama is Muslim. Especially since his CHRISTIAN preacher is getting so much airtime. People just don't pay attention.
I know. Throw everything out there and see what takes.
Hillary needs to give up. The only way she can win is by lobbying enough Superdelegates, which would alienate the voters in the popular vote. Smart move. Nothing like disenfranchising the base before the big election. This whole fight is like a giant Christmas present for John McCain - they're bickering him right into the White House. Now that he's won over the majority of the Republican party, he has about eight months to center himself as the moderate candidate that everyone can vote for. In those eight months be has plenty of time to distance himself from Bush, who is his biggest obstacle.
Hillary is proving that she would rather destroy everything so she could be the candidate, rather doing what is right for the country. In that, if she hadn't already lost my support she most certainly has accomplished it now.
Steve-I agree with every word you say here. We have to hope that McCain continutes to exhibit the memory lapses he's had of late and can be written off as too old.
And yet, I still have many friends that support Hillary. They just see her as tough rather than destructive.
