After a 12-house auction, Megan Abbott signed a three-book North American rights deal with Putnam’s Sally Kim,
moving from Little, Brown in the process. Though Putnam offered no
details about the titles under the deal, it confirmed that the first is
slated for 2021. Abbott, a celebrated crime fiction author, was
represented by Dan Conaway at Writers House. Now a sought-after name in Hollywood, Abbott is a writer on the HBO drama The Deuce.
She also, Putnam noted, has nearly all of her novels in “active
development” for either TV or film, and is the co-creator of a USA
Network series based on her novel Dare Me.
Wow. That's impressive. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteFurther good news. I remembered Putnam is part of Penguin these days, but had to refresh the memory Little, Brown is part of Hachette...scorecards at the ready...
ReplyDeleteI wondered how they came up with twelve. Could some of them be divisions of the same parent company?
ReplyDeleteOutstanding news. Mazel tov to Megan!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations
ReplyDeleteThanks from her mother at least.
ReplyDeleteWonderful news! Sorry I never got to meet her when she was at UM.
ReplyDeleteWhen were you there?
ReplyDeletePossibly there were different imprints within corporate structures competing, Patti...there's a "big five" publishers, but others are certainly rich enough to bid high...but would, say, Scholastic be in the fight for one of Megan's novels? Possibly, though I think they still want HARRY POTTER and younger-skewing material.
ReplyDeleteGeorg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group/Macmillan.
Hachette
HarperCollins.
Penguin Books.
Simon & Schuster.
Then again...leaving out those not likely to bid on a three-novel deal, there still are a fair amount of players...just not likely Wiley nor Dover...
