Maybe slightly off-topic but tangentially related: for years, I assumed that "Bye Bye Birdie" was based on the uproar over Elvis Presley getting drafted. More recently, I learned that Conway Twitty was being built up as a rock-and-roll (or maybe rockabilly) star, and rival to Elvis, in the 1950's. Twitty's career was interrupted when he was drafted. He never became as big as Elvis, although he had a following as a country singer in the 1970's. Of course, Conrad Birdie could be a composite of both singers.
Great song!!
ReplyDeleteI'm dreading the end of MAD MEN. There's nothing that can take its place!
ReplyDeleteNothing.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Matt Weiner will come up with a good new series as Vince Galligan did.
