A friend said that at one time he had lived in Greece where the movie 'Mama Mia!' was filmed. So I got it. The storyline was of no interest to me, although I'll admit I liked Abba when they were new. Even so, I reallyreally wanted to like it enough to sit through it for the scenery. I could barely manage 30 minutes before quitting. ...
I felt the same way with SEX IN THE CITY. I did like MAMA MIA a bit because it was so joyful and nice to look at, but it did suffer from the same problem as THE MEN. They were having a lot more fun than the audience.
From what you write I'd guess that it is a gimmick film, one of those that centers on some cutesy trick that entertains five minutes and then bores. Why do they do it?
I wanted to like BURN AFTER READING, which also featured Clooney (and he was good), but I just hated it. And I love the Coen brothers, too. In a strictly platonic way of course.
Just last night a group of people were extolling the virtues of BURN AFTER READING and I kept my mouth shut for once. The Coen Bros have made 75% good to great movies. But I hated that one, THE Ladykillers and Hudsucker Proxy. Oceans's Twelve was horrific. Definitely a gimmick film although apparently based on a gimmick book too.
Gee, I liked BURN AFTER READING. Haven't seen GOATS yet, but I plan to.
My experience with movies is usually the opposite; I 'm more often surprised by movies I didn't think I'd like, but do. The most recent that comes to mind was VALKYRIE. Tom Cruise was miscast, but the movie as a whole held up well.
Now that I'm thinking about it, there are several movies I knew I expected to be good, but hated. Their titles aren't coming to mind. Guess I blocked them out.
I didn't care for "The Men Who Stare At Goats", Patti. I tend to like the Coens, though, but their biggest problem is they often get in their own way. "No Country For Old Men" showed what they could really do when they restrained their quirky urges.
I do plan to watch this but haven't seen it yet.

ReplyDeleteA group of my friends saw THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS and said it sucked, Patti. I wanted to like OCEAN'S TWELVE, but it was terrible.

LADYKILLERS remake by the Coen Brothers. Some funny bits, but a bland film.
