My introduction to female mystery writers came from my dad, who had several of their paperbacks in his little (short enough for me to reach as a youngster) "mystery bookcase" in our living room. Nestled among the Mickey Spillanes, Erle Stanley Gardners and other male names were whodunnits by Mignon G. Eberhart (whose name still fascinates me), Helen MacInnes and, of course, Agatha Christie. Of them all, male and female, the only novel I remember was a Spillane--I The Jury or Vengeance is Mine, whichever one opens with "The guy was dead as hell," which startled my late '40s pre-adolescent sensibility, jump-starting a fascination for the genre that's never left me. I can't wait to get my hands on that compilation--I hope it gives some overdue exposure to some of the "forgotten" mid-century writers like Elisabeth Sanxay Holding and Dorothy B. Hughes. (Not forgotten to us, of course!)Debnoreply@blogger.com
