BORN details Kovic's experiences as a soldier in two tours of duty in Vietnam, his involvement in war atrocities, his injuries, his paralysis, his treatment at various VA facilities and his road to activism. A very hard book to read and it was a terrific movie with Tom Cruise.
Will this be the last fourth where the country we have forged is considered a democracy?
Not a big Tom Cruise fan although the movies had its moments.
ReplyDeleteIt is my sincere beliefe that We The People will soon have had enough of meretricious and self-serving politicians.
There was an article in the NYT this morning saying that Pam Bondi sent out a secret letter saying that ANY LAW that Trump doesn't like, he can - basically - nullify. This was the TikTok law, passed by an overwhelming BIPARTISAN majority, signed into law by Biden, and upheld 9-0 by the Supreme Court.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the dictatorship.
I thought Kovic's book was really good and the Cruise movie was, well, not bad, but Cruise was not my ideal choice.
It was about his best work but I agree someone else with more gravitas would have improved it.

ReplyDeleteKovics's book was one of our Honolulu junior year US History's class list of recommended titles to write a single required book report (of sorts) on.
ReplyDeleteWe've had more ridiculous presidents, if not a more stupid one (including Shrub)(or Raygun, both of who had some selective empathy) at very least since Harding, who at least had a more realistic view of himself. I suspect we might be able to weather this, but damn we really need to quit looking for a Guy To Take the Reins For Us...because Drumpf's offer of himself as such to our less attentive and more reflexive fellow citizens is how we find ourselves in the current perplex. That and not being willing to vote defensively for the less insane of two flawed candidates, where one's a hack and the other is an insane criminal, and they were the only likely options (or vote at all), and the Democratic Party giving itself over almost exclusively to neoliberalism.
We both typo'd his name!
