Gardeners

I would like to plant some new perennials here. Something with some color. It is mostly shady from a big red maple and oak but gets some sun late in the day. Any ideas in case I still get to the nursery this year. BTW there is more room than this photo shows although I don't want something that spreads too much.

If you're interested in Spring color, nothing's better than Rhododendron or Azalea, but you'll only get a month of bloom and after blooming you have to clip off the spent blooms to encourage new growth. If you are okay with things that are perennial but die back in Winter, then come back in Spring, Hardy Fuchsia, Astilbe (ours have bloom spires now), and Bleeding Heart would do, though the bloom period is short. What might work just as good would be to put in a drift of Impatients, though it's an annual they aren't colorful and will go all Spring and Summer and to first frost, at which time you rake them out and let the area rest until Spring. You could also add more Hot and ferns to intersperse with the Impatiens.

Oops, corrections:
"though it's an annual they ARE colorful..."
"You could also add more HOSTA and ferns...

Sorry.

Astilbe and bleeding heart are good suggestions. Also maybe coral bell.

I have the feel rhododendron are not right for MI because I see them so rarely.

Call the nursery and ask them, Patti. The winter may be too severe.

This all looks fabulous! If planted in my back yard, all of that stuff would be devoured by the deer, foxes, and wood chucks.

@ George, I thought your back yard was fenced?
