Mel Brooks, remaking, in a sense, the best film of Fred Allen's, IT'S IN THE BAG, which was a much looser adaptation of the Russian novel THE TWELVE CHAIRS; the older film featured Robert Benchley in an acting role, as well. That Brooks would also remake Jack Benny's best film, TO BE OR NOT TO BE, probably wasn't a coincidence in any profound way...I'd consider tributes to both of them if I were in Brooks's position as well.
