I'm very glad you saw some good films, Patti. And Roma does sound great!

  2. I wish I'd fallen asleep during THE FAVOURITE.

BLACK PANTHER was the biggest grossing movie in 2018. THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR came in second place. Disney made tons of money on those super-hero movies.

I thought 2018 was a banner year for documentaries. I loved RBG and the Fred Rogers film. But I cried during the Whitney Houston documentary. So much talent, so much promise! Tragic.

  3. All we have seen of these was BLACK PANTHER and GAME NIGHT. Enjoyed both.

Going to see Green Book this weekend. Didn't see Beale Street or Private Life. I didn't care much for Black Panther. I would agree with most of your choices, would have added Blackspotting and Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Liked the Mr Rogers bio. Never watched the Whitney Houston one since I never cared for her music.

  7. Patti, I will be watching ROMA on Netflix this weekend. I enjoyed both BLACK PANTHER and ANNIHILATION. My top 5 movies of 2018 would include Sandra Bullock's BIRD BOX that Stephen King rightly described as "Riveting." A very Happy New Year to you and everyone at home!

  8. Saw the last twenty minutes of GAME NIGHT the other night on HBO. Rachel MacAdams remains adorably charming, and the reveal was cute, as well.

I will have to gather my thoughts as to what were the best films I've seen this year. Almost all of them older films.

  9. McAdams. Less easy for me to remember than her smile.

  10. Haven't seen any of the "important" movies that will be nominated for all the awards yet. And really interested in only about three of them. My faves of last year (not necessarily the best of the year) are:
    GAME NIGHT
    THE ASSISTANT (French)
    CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?

Looking over my Netflix history I find only a handful of other 2018 movies. They were:
HEREDITARY - genuinely terrifying in parts, but the Rosemary's Baby style ending ruined it all
LOVE, SIMON - sweet and heartfelt, but not the "ground breaking" movie everyone says it is. "Glee" addressed these issues years ago and did it more affectingly.
INCIDENT IN A GHOSTLAND - forgettable indie horror movie
ISLE OF DOGS - thought I'd be enchanted, but I fell asleep
THE ENDLESS - odd and original sci-fi that sort of falls apart in the end
    UNSANE - mediocre, formulaic thriller
    OCEAN'S 8 - enjoyable, but nothing remarkable
and ANNIHILATION - awful, the worst of last year's crop

Sorry, Patti but I thought ANNIHILATION was a very bad sci-fi/horror movie. Yet another "Who's-gonna-die-next?" plot with predictable "twists" and stock sci-fi characters similar to the equally dreadful LIFE (2017). ANNIHILATION reminded me of the 1979 schlock horror/eco-thriller PROPHECY.
