My Favorite Movies of 2017

Of course, there are lots still to come. For some reason, Hollywood introduces its Christmas movies in Detroit in mid-January so I cannot include movies that would be sure to be on here.

1. MY HAPPY FAMILY

2.  LADYBIRD

3.  THE FLORIDA PROJECT

4. COLUMBUS

5. GET OUT

6. GOOD TIME

7. BABY DRIVER

8. LADY MACBETH

9. WIND RIVER

10. THE BEGUILED

RUNNERS-UP: THEIR FINEST HOUR, I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO, THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES, MUDBOUND, DUNKIRK, THE BIG SICK, LOGAN LUCKY, LOGAN, WONDER WOMAN

It was a better year for TV but not bad for movies either.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITES?

  1. I plan to see THE SHAPE OF WATER, DARKEST HOUR, THE POST, and JAMANJI : WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE in the weeks ahead.

But, right now, the movie I would go see again would be LADY BIRD.

Three Billboards... My favorite this year, the rest not in order

    Bladerunner 2049
    The Disaster Artist
    Logan Lucky
    Get Out
    Lucky
    Baby Driver
    Assault in Cell Block 99
    Wonder Woman
    It

I haven't seen Shape of Water, going to see Lady Bird today.
I'm sure I overlooked one or two.

  3. I haven't yet seen enough of them to make a list. We plan to see as many as possible in Florida. WONDER WOMAN would probably make the list. Maybe WIND RIVER. WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES. JOHN WICK - Chapter Two.

Should have been Brawl in Cell Block 99 not Assault. Should have added Dunkirk to the list.

  5. Enjoyed reading your lists, guys. I don't go to the movies much but I'm really looking forward to seeing DARKEST HOUR and THE SHAPE OF WATER. I'm also looking forward to seeing WONDER WOMAN and DUNKIRK on, I guess, Amazon, at some point.

  7. In alpha order:

    BABY DRIVER
    CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
    GET OUT
    THE RED TURTLE
THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MINNESOTA (I hope Sam Rockwell wins a slew of awards for this performance, including his long overdue Oscar)
    WONDER WOMAN

And here's my worst of 2017:
    LIFE
    IT COMES AT NIGHT

Haven't yet seen Lady Bird, Shape of Water or The Disaster Artist though I plan to see all three before the year is out. Some others (THE POST, DARKEST HOUR) I probably will wait for the DVD.

  8. OH! I forgot LOST IN PARIS. Such a delightful comedy with premier farceurs Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon. It was also Emmanuelle Riva's last film as an actress. Available on DVD. Rent it!

  9. I saw Wonder woman. I liked "Get out," which I think came out this year. not really sure what else we saw except the last Star Wars, which was ok

Saw Lady Bird today. Liked it but didn't love it. Wouldn't be on my top 10.

In terms of films released this year in the UK I would definitely pick:

    LA LA LAND
    MANCHESTER NBY THE SEA
    MOONLIGHT
    T2 - TRAINSPOTTING 2
    CERTAIN WOMEN
    DUNKIRK
    A GHOST STORY
MY JOURNEY THROUGH FRENCH CINEMA (Tavernier's awesome documentary)
    THE PARTY (Sally Potter)

and a tie between two ambitious SF films: BLADE RUNNER 2049 (marred for me by its religious subplot) and LAST JEDI

    Happy holidays Patti

  14. The first three were on my list last year, Sergio. CALL ME BY YOUR NAME just opens today.

  15. THE SHAPE OF WATER was lovely. Sally Hawkins is heartbreaking and Richard Jennings practically steals the movie in all of his scenes. Exactly what I needed just before Christmas. I liked it even more than CALL ME BY YOUR NAME because paradoxically as a fantasy romance it's more universal. Plus I'm a sucker for movies about lonely people and misfits.
