Yes it was. New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit (yes, Detroit), Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and even as far as L.A. with The Penguins of "Earth Angel" fame.
I recently spoke with an African American woman who grew up in Detroit, specifically asking her about the vocal group scene in the early 1950's. At that time local group the Midnighters were riding high with "Work with me Annie". She told me every street corner and public park had amateur groups singing to attract girls.
I guess doo wop was more of a East Coast thing. Was never aware of it in the Detroit area.
