You have some really excellent films there, Patti. A lot of real depth to them, if I can put it that way.
ReplyDeleteThe 21st Century is off to a good start with movies! I think it's a different story with novels.
ReplyDeleteI've seen almost half of your list. I don't see any that I disliked, and a number I would agree with (Memento would be near the top of my list). Of course, I don't see nearly as many as you or George. I'd have to look through year-by-year lists to come up with a list of my own.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you included The Great Beauty and Zodiac. I didn't care for You Can Count On Me or Moonlight. I would include Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Hell Or High Water, The Silence and Wolf On Wall Street. Probably Inglorious Bastards and There Will Be Blood.
ReplyDeleteAll good too except I can't watch Tarantino anymore. Need to see SPOTLESS MIND again. I think Jim Carrey would ruin it for me.
ReplyDeleteInfernal Affairs was made in Hong Kong
ReplyDeleteI have seen just one of them, No Country For Old Men, which I liked a lot.
ReplyDeleteFrom your list, I have seen and liked:
ReplyDeleteBEFORE SUNRISE, AFTER SUNSET, ZODIAC,
MYSTIC RIVER, MEMENTO, THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES (ARG version),
and both THE DEPARTED and INFERNAL AFFAIRS.
I am sure I have liked a lot of others in that time, but I would have to do more research on that.
Carey is a bit broad in spots of SPOTLESS MIND, but is pretty brilliant in others and generally comes off well. Kate Winslet has rarely if ever been better, and Kirsten Dunst likewise. Wilkinson's performance, though he's called upon to do less, seemed to me almost flawless.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised by a few of your choices, mostly not so surprised, and am very glad you gave a spot to SWIMMING POOL, which manages to overcome its gimmick.
