Forgotten Movies: THREE WOMEN

Shelly Duval, now a target of horrible men like Dr. Phil, was the glue that made THREE WOMEN work. Robert Altman made one of his strangest movies with this one. Shelly and Sissy Spacek work in at a retirement home and over the course of the film change personalities. I wondered if it would hold up, but it did. Shelly is just odd enough to bring it together. Sadly. she got more odd over time. The third woman is Janice Rule who never quite makes sense to me.

I have to admit, I never saw this, although I think that both Spacek and Duvall have done some great work. It sounds like an interesting film, though.

  2. Not really a fan, but then, I've never understood the press fawning over Altman.

  3. I think he has made at least five or six great films: MASH, MCCABE AND MRS MILLER, GOSFORD PARK, THIEVES LIKE US, NASHVILLE, CALIFORNIA SPLIT. VINCENT AND THEO.

Patti-not the real Steve above. This only happens on your site.
I would have added The Player to the best of Altman's films. I don't like Nashville as much as I once did. Also feel Gosford Park overrated and The Long Goodbye underrated.

  7. SHORT CUTS and SECRET HONOR pretty good too.
He pretends to be Deb too.

I should have added Short Cuts as one of his better films. I have 3 Women but haven't watched it for awhile.
I also remember Shelley Duvall for her Faery Tale Theater which I enjoyed at the time.

  9. Yes, although it was a shame to see here give up on acting.

  10. Let's not forget her great early bit in ANNIE HALL.

  11. I'd forgotten that entirely.

  13. Doubtful this is the real Steve. Why don't you just be yourself troll? We would be happy to hear from the real person.

    Patti-that wasn't me. I think it's obvious from the way it's written.

  15. I've never seen this film, Patti, but every time I see Janice Rule, she's almost always better than the movie she's appearing in. THE SWIMMER (1968) comes to mind, but there were others.

  16. THE SWIMMER is one of my absolute favorites! She was underused here.

Patti, another classic with Janice Rule is THE CHASE (1965) a sprawling but marvelous movie packed with big names from that era: Brando, Redford, Fonda. Its a great film Patti and well worth watching even 50 years on from its original release.
