I'm not especially a David Bowie fan but both he and Nina Simone covered Johnny Mathis' "Wild is The Wind" Mathis did it pop, Simone soul and Bowie jazz. Al three are first rate.
lot of good versions of Hallelujah-john Cale, Nick Cave esp. Didn't care for K.D. Langs tho. Love Talking Heads cover of Take Me To the River. Johnny Cash's cover of NIN Hurt.
REM's "I Am Superman" (the original is by a pretty obscure group, so most people--including me--didn't know it was a cover).
10,000 Maniac's cover of Bruce Springsteen/ Patti Smith's "Because the Night" (since they co-wrote the song, I don't know which of their versions qualifies as a cover of the other).
John Denver's cover of the Beatles' "Mother Nature's Son." I generally don't care for Beatle covers but this one is--dare I say?--better than the original.
Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders does a version of Neil Young's 'Needle and the Damage Done' that is brilliant. Having lost some band members and friends to heroin, I know it spoke to her, and it shows.
I'm still a fan of the k. d. lang version of "Hallelujah."
ReplyDeleteAnother good one.
ReplyDeleteFavorite covers could be a massive list. I thought I'd just confine it to Beatles' covers:
ReplyDeleteAcross the Universe, Rufus Wainwright.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Jake Shimabukuro.
With a Little Help From My Friends, Joe Cocker.
And one more (by Stephen Stills) we heard last night: Southern Cross, Jimmy Buffett.
Jeff M.
All great ones. I posted this on facebook also and I am deluged with music.
ReplyDeleteHendrix cover of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower.
ReplyDeleteFrank Sinatra: Only the Lonely
ReplyDeleteSeveral by Kenny Burrell:
Guitar Forms
Moon and Sand
Cool Cookin'

I've always loved that song.

What, no mention of Mrs. Miller?
