Movies About the Music Business

And there are so many. I saw FRANK yesterday, which didn't work for me. But early this summer a couple did. Perhaps one of my favorite movies about the music industry is ALMOST FAMOUS.  What are some other good ones?

  12. FM--not so much about the music industry as about radio, but with some great late-1970s music thrown in.

  15. There was an excellent movie with Illeanna Douglas supposedly based on Carole King's life. Perfect example of a movie about the music business and chock full of cleverly disguised scenes based on fact. Like the story behind Leslie Gore's first hit and the creation of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" What was it called...? Let me check imdb.com...

Aha! GRACE OF MY HEART. If you've not seen it I highly recommend it.

HIGH FIDELITY is about a record store yet it feels like it's about the music business because the characters are so connected to rock music and the groups that the listen to.

  17. I have a real soft spot for THAT THING YOU DO - I remember liking GRACE OF MY HEART, though a lot of that was due to the great song by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach.

  19. JAZZ IS MY NATIVE LANGUAGE: TOSHIKO AKIYOSHI
THE WEAVERS: WASN'T THAT A TIME
    A HARD DAY'S NIGHT
CATCH US IF YOU CAN/HAVING A WILD WEEKEND (even if ostensibly about filmmaking and advertising instead)
    THELONIOUS MONK: STRAIGHT, NO CHASER

I've never actually sat down and watched PUNK'S NOT DEAD straight through
to some extent, 32 SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD
so many more video than cinematic examples, leaving aside straight concert and impromptu performance footage...
