Happy Birthday, Doris Day

Few actresses have conducted themselves with more grace.

  1. Doris remains a class act, and talent.

  2. I love her peppy career-gal persona in the movies she made with Rock Hudson. I think she gets unfairly tagged as a goody-two-shoes, but her characters were quite sophisticated.

I love Oscar Levant's line: "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin."

  4. She has a tough life if you have read her bio. And her face never showed it. Love her early voice and her later movies.

  5. A much under appreciated singer and solid actress. I like her two 40s musicals with Jack Carson. I'm not much of a musical fan but they were great together. Carson's one of my all time favorite character actors.

  7. Older important members of AMPAS like Richard Zanuck have been lobbying for an honorary Oscar for Doris Day since the 1970s.

It's shameful that the Academy felt--feels--that her personna is too corny to be honored because of the 60s comedies.
And the younger members of the Academy have no idea she was the top grossing female star of the 1960s...

  8. TCM is doing a DD evening. Just saw 15 minutes of Move Over, Darling. Too silly for all her talent. I love her voice from when she was a girl singer. She still sounded great turning out albums in the 1950s and early 60s.

  11. The early songs are the best-less stylized but the Rock movies are my favorites. That's what being adult seemed like to me as a kid.
