U Can't Touch This

In a movie I recently saw (no spoilers here) a man prized a collection in his basement to the point that no one was permitted to lay a hand on it. I also think back on DINER, where a character berated his wife for touching his record collection (or at least not refiling albums correctly).

Do you have any collection, hobby, etc. that you don't want touched?

  1. Just those 30,000 books in my basement.

Nah, not really. As long as you put it back where it belongs, that is. I remember that DINER scene.

  3. I completely understand getting upset when someone messes up the organization, even if the other person doesn't view it as organization. One afternoon I came home to find one half of the living room completely rearranged. I complained that I couldn't find a certain book that I had put in a certain pile because Joe had combined piles and redistributed books to make them less like leaning towers of potential destruction. But I didn't go ballistic like Daniel Stern in DINER.

  4. Of course, in our house nothing has a real place. We are very fluid. Thus we can never find anything.

  5. Patti, I don't let anyone, save for my wife and kids, touch my comic books. In fact, I don't bring them out for anyone else. Ditto for our stamps collection. What was that about possessing things and not being possessed by the things you own?

  6. I don't want my family members touching anything I own. A few friends can touch my collectibles because they know how to properly handle them.

And stay off of my lawn!

This does not fit the category of collections, but I do have an "off limits" sign that my wife must wear whenever she goes out in public. Otherwise, she must remain barefoot in the kitchen. Do you think that I might be too possessive?

  8. I have several collections--teapots, cobalt blue glass, snow globes--in addition to books. Generally, neither my husband nor my children touch anything (other than the books, which are available to all)--but I think that's primarily because they're not interested in them and because everything is in curio cabinets.

Patti - I have to say - nobody touches my laptop or tablet but me.
