I grew up with this, and it's in my bones. He lived to great age, died just a few years ago. I figure Lana Turner and Ava Gardner were lucky ladies to win one of America's greatest musicians.
He didn't do badly with, oh, about ten of the most beautiful women of the era. He was a serial proposer, married ten times, but once the novelty wore off, he was outta there.
Wiki informs me that he was more abusive of his many wives than I had realized. But of all the great musicians who formed the voice of the greatest generation, to use Tom Brokaw's designation, Artie Shaw was the most important and most treasured.
