Alvy Singer: Don't you see the rest of the country looks upon New York like we're left-wing, communist, Jewish, homosexual pornographers? I think of us that way sometimes and I live here.
Weaver's first role is often said to be in Woody Allen's 1977 comedy Annie Hall playing a minor role opposite Allen, whereas she appeared at least in Sidney Lumet's Serpico three years before (she meets Al Pacino at a party).
I do not remember that at all. The year before ANNIE HALL Weaver was on the soap opera SOMERSET (a spinoff of ANOTHER WORLD).
I fell out with Woody decades ago, but this remains my absolute favorite of his movies--and that final scene, funny and poignant.
ReplyDeleteDitto, Deb. We did watch HANNAH & HER SISTERS a couple of days ago but the Michael Caine-Barbara Hershey subplot just annoyed me this time.
ReplyDeleteI can still remember seeing ANNIE HALL for the first time and how I started laughing at the opening scene.

Thanks
I remain a hardened Allen fan (BLUE JASMINE is terrific) - great to be reminded of this ... and such small portions!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's such a classic '70's movie, Patti - thanks.
ReplyDeleteNever been able to get through an entire Woody Allen movie.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those movies (OK, there are a lot of them) that I can quote from endlessly, and often do.
ReplyDelete"I used to be a heroin addict. Now I'm a methadone addict."
"I'm into leather."

This scene is Sigourney Weaver's screen debut. She's Woody's date, standing in front of the theater at 0:16.

My son can recite CADDY SHACK. A film which has always eluded me.
ReplyDeleteThe only parts of CADDYSHACK I like are the Rodney Dangerfield scenes.
