I am thinking of a Jack Vance Day on August 9th and a Patricia Highsmith Day on September 27th. Adding Ross MacDonald on November 8th. I hope I live that long.
I have never read Vance, but it looks like he has quite a number of genres and books to choose from. Highsmith also seems to have the necessary quantity.
My review of THIS IS THE END in up at
CRIMESPREE MAGAZINE.
I've read several of his books. He's a very fine stylist although I'm not a huge fan of his stories per se.
ReplyDeleteAny day I'm introduced to a new writer - in this case, Jack Vance - is a good day.
ReplyDeleteBut how about a Ross Macdonald Day to follow last year's in honour of Margaret Millar?
(Or have you already had one - in which case my face is red.)
Vance would be good. Not read but one Highsmith, the first Ripley title.
ReplyDeleteSound like good suggestions - especially looking forward to Ross Macdonald. And Patti - I have a feeling you'll outlive all of us. Or at least, we'll be celebrating the 25th anniversary of FFB in the not-too-distant future. ;-)
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS THE END giving you mortal thoughts? Ah, well...you need to stick around to see how you'll feel about writing about Millar/Macdonald...
ReplyDeleteI think I read everyone of his novels 40 years ago but have not revisited.
ReplyDelete25 years-tired even thinking of it!
I'll be curious what you all have to say about Vance, because I haven't read him. Although I did read a nice piece on him over on Do Some Damage by Brian Lindenmuth recently. You can find it here in case it stirs up anyone's memory.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of the dude. I'll try one out.
ReplyDeleteRe: Highsmith. I read the first RIPLEY book and did not understand why so many people adore the series. Highsmith herself, and the recent bio of her, do sound interesting.
ReplyDeletePatti, I love the idea of JACK VANCE, PATRICA HIGHSMITH, and ROSS MACDONALD days.
ReplyDeleteGreat!
ReplyDeleteWent to the library this morning and checked out books by all three authors. I've never read any Jack Vance, so that will be a new experience. I also chose books by Highsmith and MacDonald that I had not read before. Looking forward to participating in all three special FFBs.
ReplyDeleteDeb
Never read Vance either and looking at his books, don't know where to begin. Have read all of Ross and about half of Highsmith
