Getting the Team Together

What is your favorite movie where the story begins with someone assembling a group or team in order to achieve a goal? I'll start with THE SEVEN SAMURAI.

  1. I am put in mind of a lot of caper films:

    TOPKAPI
    OCEAN'S 11 (the original)
    SEVEN THIEVES

and one of my all time favorites (not a caper movie):
    THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKEROO BANZAI

    Maybe not exactly fitting the description;
    Glory

  3. Yes, it can be any kind of team. I am thinking of lots of different kinds of films where this takes place.

  4. The team part isn't the best of it, but RONIN is one of my very favorite movies.

  5. I like the way Lee Marvin put together THE DIRTY DOZEN.

  6. I'll go with personal favorites MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and DIRTY DOZEN. Yes, I know SEVEN is taken from a Japanese film, but I like this version.

  7. I like all those mentioned, plus of course The Magnificent Seven. Also The Professionals.

  8. I love all the movies mentioned but my heart still belongs to The Blues Brothers. It exposed me to a lot of musicians and changed my record-buying habits forever.

  9. SNEAKERS is my favorite.

Many good ones mentioned here; I'll have to re-watch some...

Not a movie but an episode of The Simpsons: "The Book Job" based on Ocean's Eleven, where Homer and Bart recruit a team (featuring Neil Gaiman) to write the next young adult blockbuster book series. One of the best Simpsons' episodes of the past decade.

    The Magnificent Seven

I also liked "The Black Seal" episode of Blackadder when Edmund assembles "the six most evil men in the kingdom" in his (futile) attempt to take the throne.

I never thought about it that way but you're right about The Commitments. Good choice.

  14. Since someone beat me to The Blues Brothers, I'd lose my hero card if I didn't mention The Avengers!

  15. I meant to put that one up first thing after SEVEN SAMURAI, Thanks!

I'm probably stretching the point, but I enjoy mentioning I LOVE YOU TO DEATH in any context. (Hilarious movie, terrible title.) The outraged wife and her mother recruit an employee and the dimmest pair of aspring hitmen ever to appear onscreen.

  17. I don't think I've ever seen that, Al. Have to check it out.

  18. Since The Magnificent Seven, The Dirty Dozen, and The Professionals have been mentioned, I'll say The Guns of Navarone. I can't think of the noir titles that do this. the one where they rob a race track and the one where they rob a factory payroll using a fuel truck as their Trojan Horse.
