Suffers slightly in comparison to the two vocalists on the original, but a fine reading (and the way the lyrics are just a bit vaguer about what's just a ____ away, shot or kiss or whatever else, makes the original more haunting).
I like the LATER show, though it's still not quite up to SUNDAY NIGHT/NIGHT MUSIC...
Patti Smith gave one of the most electric performances I have ever seen, touring for the Easter album in 1978 (I think) at Randy's Rodeo in San Antonio where the Sex Pistols had eariler performed. Love it and her music still. Listened to the HORSES alnum just the other day.

ReplyDeleteWish I could say I heard her live at least once. One of the rockingest voices on earth.
ReplyDeleteSaw her back in the day when her encore was "You Light Up My Life"--no joke!
ReplyDeleteAs for "Gimme Shelter," it's just not the same without Mick, Keith, and Merry Clayton.
She always makes me think of Gilda Radner's "Candy Slice" doing "Gimme Mick" on SNL, surely the inspiration for Amy Winehouse.
